The Kremlin in Moscow
Today, it hopefully became clear how the transition occurred that brought Russia from a principality to the beginnings of an empire.
The powerful city of Moscow was able to grow steadily in terms of power and influence over other parts of Russia, and to this day is the leading city of the Russian people in terms of politics and culture.
Other parts of Eastern Europe were similar in many ways to the Russians, but very different in terms of their development. As mentioned in the chapter, Eastern Europe (the area between the Baltic Sea and Black Sea) was full of diversity, including several different Slavic subcultures (see below) and influenced by Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

With a lack of natural barriers, Eastern Europe (like Russia) was often invaded by different groups, from all directions. Pay close attention to the examples given in the book, including Serbia, Poland, and Hungary.
